Proper permanent makeup aftercare is essential for achieving beautiful, long-lasting results. Whether youβve received eyebrow tattooing, lip blush, permanent eyeliner, freckles, or beauty marks, following these PMU healing instructions carefully will ensure the pigment heals evenly and maintains its color retention.
To protect and nourish your new cosmetic tattoo, use only gentle, fragrance-free skincare products:
Lotion (for healing):
After Inked
Hustle Butter
Aveeno Unscented Lotion
Soap (for cleansing):
Cetaphil Gentle Cleanser
Aveeno Unscented Sensitive Body Wash
π« Avoid scented products, exfoliants, facial acids, acne treatments, or anything containing retinol, glycolic acid, or salicylic acid.
Right after your permanent makeup procedure, gently blot the tattooed area with a clean, dry paper towel to remove any plasma (clear fluid). Continue blotting as needed throughout the day β do not allow plasma to form a hard crust, as this can affect pigment retention.
Before bed:
Gently wash the tattooed area with lukewarm water and unscented soap using patting motions only (no rubbing or wiping).
Pat dry with a clean towel β avoid friction.
Keep your brows, lips, or eyeliner out of direct shower spray for at least 2 weeks or until all scabs have naturally come off.
When washing your face, use a damp cloth and carefully avoid the treated area.
Do not apply lotion on Day 1.
Wash the area twice daily (morning and evening) with unscented cleanser and lukewarm water, patting gently.
After washing, pat dry and apply a very thin layer of lotion over the tattooed area twice a day.
Continue to keep the treated area clean, dry, and protected from water spray.
Avoid makeup, creams, and oils on or near the tattoo until fully healed.
Continue your Day 2 aftercare routine for the remainder of the healing period (approximately 1β2 weeks) or until all scabs have fully come off. Once the area has shed naturally, you may resume normal cleansing and activities.
To prevent pigment loss or infection, avoid the following until healing is complete:
β Picking, peeling, or scratching the tattooed area
β Direct shower spray or submerging your face in water
β Hot tubs, saunas, and steam rooms
β Exercise, sweating, or strenuous activity (gym, running, hiking)
β Makeup on the treated area
β Bleaching, tinting, or dyeing brows or lashes
β Acne or anti-aging products with benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, retinol, AHAs, or glycolic acids
β Waxing, threading, or using depilatory creams on the treated area
These restrictions apply for approximately 2 weeks or until all scabs have naturally come off.
During your permanent makeup healing, itβs normal to experience:
Mild itching, flaking, and scabbing
Temporary fading or patchiness once scabs shed
Pigment that appears lighter or duller before resurfacing
Allow 6β8 weeks for full color development on eyebrows, eyeliner, freckles, and beauty marks.
For lip blush tattoos, full healing can take 6β8 weeks (up to 12 weeks for melanin-rich corrective lip procedures).
To maintain your permanent makeup results and prevent fading:
Always apply sunscreen when exposed to sunlight β UV rays can lighten pigment.
Avoid chemical peels, microdermabrasion, and glycolic acid products near the tattoo.
Inform your technician before undergoing any laser treatments or laser hair removal, as lasers can alter pigment color.
Touch-ups or color adjustments can be made once your skin has completely healed.
